Sinking ships

“Loose Lips” written and performed by Kimya Dawson:

Loose lips might sink ships but loose kisses take trips
To san francisco, double dutch disco,
Tech tv hottie, do it for scotty
Do it for the living and do it for the dead
Do it for the monsters under your bed
Do it for the teenagers and do it for your mom
Broken hearts hurt but they make us strong and

We won’t stop until somebody calls the cops
And even then we’ll start again and just pretend that
Nothing ever happened

We won’t stop until somebody calls the cops
And even then we’ll start again and just pretend that
Nothing ever happened

We’re just dancing, we’re just hugging,
Singing, screaming, kissing, tugging
On the sleeve of how it used to be
How’s it gonna be?
I’ll drop kick russell stover, move into the starting over house
And know matt rouse and jest are watching me achieve my dreams

And we’ll pray, all damn day, every day,
That all this **** our president has got us in will go away
While we strive to figure out a way we can survive
These trying times without losing our minds

So if you wanna burn yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
And if you wanna cut yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
And if you wanna kill yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
Call me up before your dead, we can make some plans instead
Send me an IM, I’ll be your friend

Shysters live from scheme to scheme and my 4th quarter pipe dreams
Are seeming more and more worth fighting for
So I’ll curate some situations, make my job a big vacation
And I’ll say **** BUSH AND **** THIS WAR
My war paint is sharpie ink and I’ll show you how much my **** stinks
And ask you what you think because your thoughts and words are powerful
They think we’re disposable, well both my thumbs opposable
Are spelled out on a double word and triple letter score

We won’t stop until somebody calls the cops
And even then we’ll start again and just pretend that
Nothing ever happened

We won’t stop until somebody calls the cops
And even then we’ll start again and just pretend that
Nothing ever happened

We’re just dancing, we’re just hugging,
Singing, screaming, kissing, tugging
On the sleeve of how it used to be

Man, this song brings back a lot of memories. Not all good but definitely not all bad ones. When I was in 8th grade, my depression really started to devour me and I lost a lot of friends and went through a whole breakdown blah blah blah blah blah. I had one friend who shared a bunch of classes with me in 8th grade. This Emma Tatge girl was always kind of different but in a good way unlike me. At one point of my neurasthenia, she made me a mixed tape. Well technically it was a CD but whatever. In our modern society, friends very rarely go out of their way to put together a collection of personalized songs in an effort to actually help another friend. It was very special, whether she meant for it to be or not.

Within this mixed CD tape were numerous albums of different bands. To this day, I still listen to a majority of these bands. Some of these include The Head and the Heart, Fleet Foxes, BOY, The Mouldy Peaches, The Velvet Underground, and of course, the one and only Kimya Dawson. Probably my favorite song of all time is “Loose Lips” by Kimya Dawson. If you listen to it, you’re definitely going to be overwhelmed at first. It’s a lot of words in not a lot of time. But if you can figure out what the words are, something amazing happens. You can hear the pain, you can feel the triumph, you can inherit the enduring desire to help a fellow comrade. You hear yourself.

At the time, this verse really hit home:

“So if you wanna burn yourself remember that I LOVE YOU

And if you wanna cut yourself remember that I LOVE YOU

And if you wanna kill yourself remember that I LOVE YOU

Call me up before your dead, we can make some plans instead”

But now that I’ve moved past that phase of my life and the opaque lens of that sort of innocence has been removed, this verse takes precedence in my brain:

“And we’ll pray, all damn day, every day, That all this **** our president has got us in will go away While we strive to figure out a way we can survive These trying times without losing our minds”

Amen, sister. We are living in days ridden by the problems of yesterday yet we are still somehow the ones to blame. My generation did not get us stuck in war with the Middle East. My generation did not invent the technology we all are so incessantly addicted to. My generation did not bring society to where it is today. Somehow I’m supposed to make this world a better place while still picking up the trash my predecessors so carelessly left behind. My elders can complain about us all they want, but at least I know that I’m not the one that got us here. These lyrics keep me in line; all I need to worry about is surviving. I don’t need to stress about the big picture of the world because I don’t have the necessary control to make a huge difference. As my friend Simon always says, “you do you.”

Here’s a link to the song (I couldn’t find a clean version):
